Our Staff & Teachers.
Safety, in these times
Due to the threatening nature of the current administration, all staff and teachers except our founder and lead teacher, Isa Coffey, RN, will be kept safe by not appearing on our website. Once we are again safe within our own country, we will proudly display ourselves in all our brilliance and beauty.
Isa Coffey, RN, has taught whole sexuality for all her adult years, beginning at 20 when she began working at the famous Feminist Women’s Health Center. She’s taught in clinics, in schools, in universities. She’s taught in people’s living rooms, in forests, in a bunch of kitchens. Isa gained her RN at Hunter College as a returning student, with a focus on women’s health. During her time at Hunter she was known to paper over the windows of classrooms to demonstrate self-cervical exam. She’s worked as a labor and delivery nurse; as a home-birth doula; and has birthed two children, both at home. She’s taught sexuality education at many elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges.
She’s also pumped gas, worked at the Dole Pineapple Factory, and created a bunch of gardens.
15 years ago, having been fired from two schools for teaching whole sexuality education - once because a small, angry group of parents was furious she was a gay person teaching sex ed, the other because a parent who’d been sexually harmed wasn’t able to manage seeing her daughter taught about the beauty of the vulva - Isa decided to start her own independent school where adults, kids, teens, and families could learn real sex ed together, with the natural world as source and as foundation.
For all these 15 years, WiseBodies has been a small, powerful beacon for how sexuality education can be.
Isa lives with Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy. She’s part of the remarkable world of disability and disabled people. A blessing.
Isa came out as a lesbian at 19, and has been out ever since.
